Good for consumers, good for the planet?
California Governor Jerry Brown?s appointment of Mike Florio, a well-known, life-long consumer advocate, to a seat on the California Public Utilities Commission raises an interesting question for those who view the world primarily through green-colored glasses. What does a consumer advocate have to offer toward the advancement of an environmental agenda ? at least in the energy utility world?
There was a time when consumer and environmental priorities seemed to have little in common. Take Mike Florio?s organization, TURN, for instance. Its founder Sylvia Siegel was a strident opponent of any ?extraneous? utility expenditure ? whether it was for ... More >School Laptop Wifi

Why football injuries can be like prejudiced remarks
I think it can be hard for non-professional athletes such as myself to understand the incredible significance of reaching the championship game of a sport when that sport is what you do for a living. We think, it’s just a game, but for these atheletes, it’s their life, their identity. Just imagine having the opportunity to vie for the very top achievement in your own profession.

The real economic lesson China could teach us
Highlighting the summit between Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Obama is China?s agreement to buy $45 billion of American exports. The President says this will create more American jobs. That?s not exactly right. It will create more profits for American companies but relatively few new jobs.
Nearly half of the deal is for two hundred Boeing aircraft whose parts come from all over the world. The rest involves agricultural commodities that don?t require much U.S. labor because American agribusiness is highly automated, and chemical and high-tech goods that are even less labor-intensive.

?Cementing? the GOP?s environmental policy in place
It looks like an early agenda item for the GOP will be eliminating EPA?s regulation of cement plants, according to press reports. H.J. Res. 100 would repeal the regulation and prevent any future similar regulation.Economists and environmentalists should be equally unhappy with this rollback effort.
This is one regulation where the cost-benefit analysis seems to come out firmly on the environmental side, according to the NY Times environmental blog,

A time to spend
The central insight of macroeconomics is a fact that was known to John Stuart Mill in the first third of the nineteenth century: there can be a large gap between supply and demand for pretty much all currently produced goods and services and types of labor if there is an equally large excess demand for financial assets. And this fundamental fact is a source of big trouble.
A normal gap between supply and demand for some subset of currently produced commodities is not a serious problem, because it is balanced by excess demand for ... More >Administrator Advertising Blog
