Gail Bederman's book, Manliness and Civilization, is an exploration of the connection between manhood and race during the early twentieth century (p. 5). Specifically, the author examines the cultural and hegemonic processes used by white middle-class men to maintain power and authority in light of changing social and economic conditions. Chapter one of this book, "Remaking Manhood," uses the story of Jack Johnson to illustrate these forces in action.
