Scully draws a parallel between Semenya and Sara Baartman. Baartman was also from South Africa. Europeans viewed Baartman through their views of beauty; consequently, she was seen as a freak, and a scientific case. In 1815 an autopsy was performed to examine her body to see if there was a link between mankind and animal.
